Computer Posture and Chiropractic

Hi everyone

It has been a while since I updated my blog!! I have been quite busy with my travels for my master and all the homework that comes with it!!

Last week, I posted this photo on my facebook page. It triggered quite a bit of discussion. It was even brought up at a cocktail that I attended on Friday. Somebody said once they saw it, they immediately straightened out. It goes to show you that I am sure many of you have very poor posture while you sit at the computer. In the long run, this posture will cause you  lots of spinal issues and pain !!! I tease sometimes my patients by saying that computer is the best invention that  keeps us in business!!!

I thought I would review a few tips for good posture at the computer. Obviously, the best is to get a professional to come eveluate your work station to make sure you are really well set up to avoid any issue. Check with your employer because most of them will cover such an evaluation.

1- Make sure the computer is straight in front of you. You do not want to have to twist to always look at it.

2- Make sure you are well seated in a chair all the way to the back.  Keep your shoulder straight back

3- Make sure your eyes are centred in the middle of the screen.

4-Make sure your computer is about 14-16 inches away from your eyes

5- Make sure your elbows are well supported on the arm rest of the chair or on your desk. When the elbows stay a long time with no support they create alot of tension in the upper back and neck.

6-Set a little alarm on your computer so that every 45 min to an hour you do some basic neck stretches!!

7- Get up regularly and move around.

I hope these tips will help you the next time you sit at the computer. If you start experiencing issues neck pain, headaches, back pain do not hesitate to consult a chiropractor and review your work posture.
